ACMK1A:
'The Convenient Choice' (4 Days / 3 Nights)
(Mt. Kenya Climb Trekking Up Naromoru, Down
Sirimon) |
 |
|
|
| Mount Kenya is one
of the most scenic volcanic mountains in the world. The
main features of Mt. Kenya include steep volcanic cliffs
and gorges, tarns, picturesque valleys, outcropped ridges
and cols that were formed by the cooling lava and subsequent
glacial erosion. The best way to appreciate nature is to
experience it. For Mount Kenya, the best way to experience
its awesome beauty is to climb it. An extinct volcano which
last erupted about 3.5 million years ago. Mount Kenya rises
to an altitude of 5,199 (17,058 feet) making it the highest
mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa only
second to Kilimanjaro. Any climb to the highest peak, Point
Lenana, has never been an easy one. A steep pre-dawn ascent
to the summit is both difficult and tiring but awe-inspiring.
You walk on rugged topography and scree slopes. That is
why "its conquest" brings with it a sense of achievement
and satisfaction. Learn

| Mt.
Kenya Climbing Itinerary: 4 Days / 3 Nights |
 |
|
|
An ascent through
the shortest and oldest route on Mt Kenya. After the difficult
climb across the peat bogs popularly known as "Vertical
Bog" and the eventual attempt of the summit, you descend
through the Sirimon route at a more or less gradual pace.
Day 0: Nairobi - Mount Kenya (Acclimatization)
An optional day ahead of the mountain trek spent at the
Base lodge (2000m) for preparations and acclimatization.
This pre-hike day is included in our all inclusive trip
option. Those whose itinerary includes this day are advised
to arrive at the Lodge in time for lunch in order to have
the rest of the afternoon to participate in fitness activities
that help with acclimatization. If you are from Nairobi
leave by 9.00am or earlier. A choice of two hiking excursions
is available today. The first option is a 3 hours escorted
nature hike into the forest destined for the Mau Mau Caves,
an awesome site with an interesting history related to Kenyan's
struggle for independence in the 1950s. The 2nd option is
the Eco-conscious escorted hike through the local community's
land, visiting local homes, farms and schools. In the process
you help support the local communities' initiative in tourism
and conservation. Dinner and Overnight - Mountain Rock Lodge
or similar
Day 1:
Met Station Lodge (3000m)
Depart at 1000hrs to be transferred to Naromoru Park gate.
(Clients traveling from Nairobi should arrive at the lodge
latest 1300hrs for a quick lunch and onward transfer to
the Park gate). From here, hike on a wide dirt road through
the dense forest up to the Met Station Lodge. Dinner and
overnight - Met Station Lodge (3000m)
Day 2:
Mackinders camp (4300m)
A short walk to the end of the forest line from where
you hike across the marshy vertical bog of the lower moorlands.
Picnic lunch at the Picnic Rocks before continuing further
to Mackinders camp, gaining 1300m in altitude in about
5 hours. Dinner and overnight - Mackinders camp (4300m)
Day 3:
Shiptons camp (4200m)
Leave at 0300 hrs for predawn summit attempt, trekking
for 3-4 hours across bare rock and scree slopes characteristic
of the alpine region up to Pt. Lenana (4985m), the hikers
summit, arriving in time to catch the African sunrise.
Later descend to Shiptons camp (Sirimon route) for breakfast
then have the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner and overnight
- Shiptons camp (4200m)
Day 4:
Back to Nairobi
After early morning breakfast, descend for 5 hours up
to the Sirimon Park gate to catch a vehicle for the return
journey to Mountain Rock Lodge for shower and lunch. Later
transfer back to Nairobi arriving by 1700 hrs. Tip: A
second night prior to summit attempt is recommended at
Mackinders to help boost acclimatization and hence increase
your chances of reaching the summit.
