| Kenya's
Diverse Cultural Attractions |
|
|
The culture of Kenya
is intriguing for an anthropologist and a tourist alike.
Kenya is a diverse country, with many different cultures
represented. Notable cultures include the Swahili on the
coast, pastoralist communities in the north, and several
different communities in the central and western regions.
Today, the Masai culture is the best known, due to its heavy
exposure from tourism. The history of Kenya reveals the
presence of humankind in Kenya from the early Stone Age.
Kenya was also a migratory path, which saw the arrival of
clans and tribes from Africa and the Middle East.
Kenya, with such diversity in religion and nationality,
does not have particularly unique culture. Culture of Kenya
is an amalgamation of thoughts of various communities, ideas
of different nationalities and philosophies of divergent
religious beliefs. But its diversity in cultural behavior,
the people of Kenya live in a mutual harmony and friendliness
with each other. |

Tribes and Cultural History |
 |
|
|
|
The history of Kenya reveals that
Kenya is but a cultural microcosm of the larger continent
of Africa. About 97% of Kenya's population comprises of
people of African descent who belong to over 70 different
tribal groups. Among the most significant Kenya Tribes
are the Kikuyu, Kamba, Gusii, Luhya, and Luo. Kenya's
primary languages are English and Swahili, though there
are many regional tribal languages. Kenya has developed
its own lingua franca, Swahili, which is a Bantu language
with strong traces of Arabic.
Interestingly enough, the word safari is Swahili, which
means travel. There are about 42 different tribes in Kenya
- each of these with its own unique culture, but majority
of them with intertwining cultural practices brought about
by the close resemblance in the languages, the similar
environment and physical proximity of the tribes. The
tribes are grouped into larger sub-groups - based on their
cultural and linguistic similarities. T
here are three major unifying categories of languages:
the Bantu speaking people of the Coastal region, the Central
Highlands and the Western Kenya Region, The Nilotes who
are mainly found in the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria
Region and the Cushites who are mainly composed of pastoralists
and nomads in the drier North Eastern part of the country.
Of note is that these sub-groups span a vast area of not
just Kenya, but the East, Central and Southern African
Region as a whole.
