Day 01
: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania
Upon arrival into Kilimanjaro International Airport and
after clearing customs and immigration, you will be met
and transferred to the Serena Mountain Village. An imaginative
recreation of a traditional Arican Village set in the
heart of a coffee estate at the foothills of Mount Meru,
with great views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. Just 10
minutes from Arusha and 20 minutes from Kilimanjaro International
Airport, the lodge is the perfect basis for a Safari to
the National Park and to Kilimanjaro. The Lodge has 38
romantic rondavels and 4 suites, set in beautiful gardens.
Every room has a private bathroom with shower and the
suites also have baths and a private verandah overlooking
the Duluti Lake. The restaurant serves international cuisine.
Guests may enjoy a relaxing walk around the lake. Dinner
and Overnight at SERENA MOUNTAIN VILLAGE (LD)
Day 02
: Arusha / Tarangire National Park
Drive to Tarangire National Park, where you will enjoy
afternoon game viewing. Tarangire National Park is probably
one of the least visited of the northern Tanzanian game
parks, and retains a real air of undiscovered Africa,
particularly in the south of the park. Just a two hours
drive away from Arusha, the park is a nice stop if time
does not allow for a visit to Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
Tarangire National Park is named after the Tarangire River
that flows through the park. It is the vast number of
baobabs that first capture the eye as you enter Tarangire
National Park. The gently rolling countryside is dotted
with these majestic trees, which seem to dwarf the animals
that feed beneath them. TARANGIRE SOPA LODGE (BLD)
Day 03
: Tarangire National Park / Lake Manyara National Park
After a morning of game viewing and a picnic lunch in
Tarangire National Park, continue to Lake Manyara National
Park. This afternoon, choose from a cycling safari, a
village walk, a forest hike or a short nature walk. In
Lake Manyara National Park, the hauntingly beautiful soda
lake sprawls on the Rift Valley floor, below the sheer
red cliffs of the escarpment. Sometimes pink-tinged with
the wings of migratory flamingos, Lake Manyara is home
to pelicans and many other bird species. Elephant, hippo,
monkey, leopard and bushbuck are found in the unique groundwater
forest. Closer to the vast lake, flat-topped acacia trees
and open grassland are host to plains species and the
famous tree-climbing Manyara lions. LAKE MANYARA SERENA
SAFARI LODGE (BLD)
Day 04
: Lake Manyara National Park
On your full-day game drive youll find an abundance
of wildlife, including hippos, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes,
leopards, impalas, wildebeests, baboons and monkeys. Nestling
at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park
is recognized for its incredible beauty. Wildlife at Lake
Manyara is not restricted to birdlife only. Many game
animals such as Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Impala, hippo
and a great variety of smaller animals also inhabit the
park. Elephant, giraffe, buffalo and wildebeest can be
found grazing in unexpected clearings or heading towards
the water to drink or wash, and the rivers and riverbeds
provide scenic vistas for possible animal spottings. Warthog
seem to thrive here, growing notably fat and tuskered,
and it is a natural playground for baboons and monkeys.
Lake Manyara is also renown for its tree-climbing lions
which spend most of the day spread out along the branches
of acacia trees six to seven metres above the ground.
However, these legendary tree-climbing lion of Lake Manyara
inspire extensive theorising as to the wonders of evolution,
though are notoriously rarely seen. LAKE MANYARA SERENA
SAFARI LODGE (BLD)
Day 05
: Lake Manyara National Park / Ngorongoro Crater
Ascend through the highlands to the very rim of the Ngorongoro
Crater. Ngorongoro is a truly fascinating and unusual
Conservation Area which includes the mystery of the Ngorongoro
Crater at its centre, and then extends through the Crater
Highlands, in which local tribes are permitted to maintain
their traditional lifestyles in as natural environment
as possible. This extraordinary volcanic landscape is
rich and fertile, with stunning craters and lakes, and
the high altitude creates a malaria-free micro climate.
Situated on the craters rim, NGORONGORO SERENA SAFARI
LODGE offers a magnificent view of the crater below. From
there, descend into the crater for a full afternoon of
game viewing. Vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle,
buffalo, and their predatorsthe big catsroam
the crater floor. NGORONGORO SERENA SAFARI LODGE (BLD)
Day 06
:Ngorongoro Crater / Olduvai Gorge / Serengeti National
Park
Visit an archeological site at Olduvai Gorge. Continue
to Serengeti National Park, one of the finest game parks
in all of Africa. The Serengeti National Park is home
to an estimated 3 million plains game, the largest concentration
of such wildlife in the world. Life on the Serengeti is
a complex cycle defined by the rains. The short rains
begin in November to mid-December, prompting the migration
back to the south-western part of the Serengeti. From
mid December to March, the short grass plains are alive
with migrant herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles.
When the long rains begin in April, the plains are at
their most beautiful, vivid with wildflowers and teeming
game. After settling in at the lodge, enjoy an afternoon
game drive. SERENGETI SERENA SAFARI LODGE (BLD)
Day 07
: Serengeti National Park
The morning may be spent along the river searching for
leopard, or exploring some of the rocky kopjes (hills)
for lion or cheetah resting in the shade. Tanzania's oldest
and most popular national park, the Serengeti National
Park is famed for its annual migration, when some six
million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000
zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeests
trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is
quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating
game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller
groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands
of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grants gazelle.
The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzanias
greatest park. A balloon safari is available on request
(extra cost). SERENGETI SERENA SAFARI LODGE (BLD)
Day 08
: Serengeti National Park / Depart Kilimanjaro
This mornings pre-breakfast game drive is your final
opportunity to bask in the unmatched grandeur of the African
safari lands before flying to Arusha for lunch. A day
room is provided at SERENA MOUNTAIN VILLAGE before
you transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your evening departure
flight. You may want to extend your stay with a few days
of relaxation in Zanzibar, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
or flying to the Selous Game Reserve. (BL)
